BELARUSSIAN CHILDREN'S
MINISTRY
Belarus is a small country whose southern border is just 12 kilometers north of Chernobyl Reactor #4, site of
the terrible nuclear accident of April 26, 1986. By its scale, complicity and long-term consequences, it is the
most severe catastrophe throughout the entire history of atomic energy use. Seventy percent of this radiation
fell on the country of Belarus.
The American Belarussian Relief Organization (ABRO) brings children from Belarus to American for six weeks each
summer to give their bodies a rest from the contamination.
Summer's Hope Belarussian Ministry was established at Southview in 1997. Our mission is to feed these children
spiritually as well as physically. All of the children receive medical check-ups, eye and dental exams. The children
attend church with the host families. We try to "plant at seed". To expose them to the Word of God
and hopefully they will take this back home to their families. We have some children that have accepted the Lord
and then were baptized during past visits. These children benefit greatly from the checkups, clean food and air
and the exposure to the Gospel. We also provide Bibles for each of the children.
Dr Norem at Cape Fear Family Medical Center, that provided the physical this year for the children, said that
she noticed the children were healthier this year than before -- a testimony that what we are doing is making
a difference in a child's life.
This year we brought 25 children and 2 chaperones. Of these children 5 were new here for the first time. We have
8 churches that participate in the program. The host families are responsible for the cost to bring the child
thru the ABRO (American/ Belarussian Relief Organization).
We all hope and pray that this ministry will continue to grow and that more children will be able to come and
be helped to get out of the contaminated area. For more information, see the ABRO website.
